Water in the surrounding soil drains into the stone, enters the pipe through the perforations, and flows by gravity to a discharge point lower than the trench. That is it. No pump, no power, just slope and stone doing the work.
The magic and the trouble are both in the details. The trench has to slope continuously toward the discharge, usually at least an inch of fall every eight feet. The stone has to be clean and angular so it does not pack. The fabric has to wrap the stone, not just line the trench, so silt cannot migrate in and clog the pipe. And the discharge has to actually go somewhere lower by gravity. Get those right and a French drain runs for decades. Get the slope or the discharge wrong and you have buried a pipe that holds water instead of moving it.

Exterior Footing Drain (Drain Tile)
The heavy option. The crew excavates the soil down to the base of the foundation wall, exposes the footing, installs perforated drain tile in stone against it, and usually re-waterproofs the wall while it is open. This relieves hydrostatic pressure right at the footing, where the most damaging water sits. It is the most effective exterior fix and the most expensive, because excavating the perimeter of a house to full depth is a major job. It is warranted when water is entering below grade and grading and shallower drainage have not solved it.
Start With the Cheap Stuff: Grading and Downspouts
Before any trench gets dug, two fixes solve a surprising share of North Shore water problems for very little money. Skipping them is the most common mistake homeowners make.
Positive grading. The soil should slope away from the foundation, dropping about six inches over the first ten feet.
